167 Fractures: A Victim of Edward I’s War Wolf?

A medieval skeleton shattered by 167 fractures has emerged as one of the most extraordinary pieces of evidence yet discovered for the violence of medieval siege warfare. The remains came from Stirling Castle in Scotland, one of the most fiercely contested strongholds of the Wars of Scottish Independence. Researchers now believe that a high-velocity projectile from a trebuchet may have struck the young man.

There is an even more intriguing possibility. If the man died during Edward I of England’s siege of Stirling in 1304, the weapon responsible could conceivably have been the famous War Wolf, the enormous trebuchet constructed on Edward’s orders to batter the castle into submission. That connection, however, is not proven.

The skeleton was not, as some recent headlines might suggest, newly excavated. It was discovered beneath the medieval chapel at Stirling Castle in 1997. What has changed is the evidence that researchers can extract from those bones. New forensic examination, presented by biological anthropologist Jo Buckberry at the 25th European Meeting of the Paleopathology Association in Berlin on 5 August 2026, has transformed what was once thought to be extensive post-burial damage into evidence of a catastrophic death.

A Medieval Cold Case Beneath Stirling Castle

The burials beneath Stirling Castle had been attracting scholarly attention long before the latest announcement.

In 2012, Buckberry, Janet Montgomery and Julia Lee-Thorp presented research on the human remains from the castle at the 39th International Symposium on Archaeometry in Leuven. Their work established that several individuals had suffered injuries around the time of death, including blunt-force, sharp-force and penetrating trauma. One person was already recognised as having suffered more than 80 peri-mortem fractures. The burial setting, together with evidence of violent injury, led the researchers to associate at least some of the remains with conflict during the Scottish Wars of Independence.

By 2025, the University of Bradford reported that Buckberry was using CT and micro-CT scanning to examine the Stirling remains more closely. Digital reconstruction offered something archaeologists working in the 1990s could not easily achieve: the ability to examine complex fractures in three dimensions and distinguish injuries sustained when bone was still fresh from breaks caused centuries after burial. That work has now produced a remarkable picture of the individual designated Skeleton 150.

What 167 Fractures Reveal

Researchers have identified 167 fractures across Skeleton 150. Sixty-one were found in the skull and another 57 in the ribs, with further damage affecting the vertebrae, arms and right shoulder. Most of the destruction was concentrated in the upper half of the body. 

It is not simply the number of broken bones that matters. Some fractures display unusual zigzag patterns. Similar patterns are known in modern forensic cases involving extremely energetic impacts, such as serious road accidents. Using microscopy, radiography, micro-CT and three-dimensional scanning, Buckberry and her colleagues concluded that these bones had broken around the time of death rather than after burial. 

The distribution of injuries provides further clues. The main impact seems to have concentrated around the back of the head and right shoulder. Researchers believe the man was probably standing when he was struck, with his back towards whatever hit him. His collapse would have been extremely rapid and death almost certainly immediate.

This scenario creates an unusual problem for historians and forensic archaeologists: what in the early fourteenth century could have delivered such an enormous amount of energy in a single impact?

A fall from the castle walls has been considered, as has trampling, crushing and falling masonry. The researchers argue that the pattern and concentration of the damage are difficult to reconcile with these alternatives. The injuries instead point to a heavy object travelling at unusually high velocity. That brings the trebuchet into the investigation.

Why a Trebuchet Fits the Evidence

The counterweight trebuchet was among the most formidable pieces of military technology available to a medieval army.

Its principle was relatively straightforward. A heavily weighted end of a long pivoting arm was raised and then released. As the counterweight fell, the opposite end of the arm swung rapidly upwards, pulling a sling containing a stone projectile. At the correct point in the arc, the sling released its missile towards the target.

These machines were principally designed to attack fortifications rather than individual soldiers. Their purpose was to strike gates, towers and curtain walls repeatedly with heavy projectiles, weakening or collapsing masonry until an assault became possible.

Yet anyone caught in the path of one of those projectiles—or beneath masonry displaced by one, faced devastating consequences.

Buckberry’s interpretation is that Skeleton 150 suffered the sort of high-energy trauma that a siege projectile could produce. She has nevertheless stressed an important limitation: effectively, no directly comparable archaeological cases exist against which the injuries can be tested. If the interpretation is correct, Skeleton 150 may itself constitute the first archaeological evidence yet identified of direct trebuchet trauma.

The location and dating of the remains make that possibility considerably more interesting. They place the man at Stirling Castle during one of the most violent periods in its history.

Stirling Castle and Edward I’s War

Few castles mattered more during the Wars of Scottish Independence. Stirling Castle occupies a commanding volcanic outcrop overlooking the upper Forth Valley. In medieval Scotland, its position was strategically crucial because it dominated major routes between northern and southern Scotland and the important crossing of the River Forth. Whoever controlled Stirling possessed not simply a fortress but one of the gateways through the kingdom.

That explains why the castle repeatedly changed hands after war between England and Scotland began in 1296. Edward I seized Stirling in that year. Following the Scottish victory at Stirling Bridge in 1297, it returned to Scottish control before the English recovered it after Edward’s victory at Falkirk in 1298. Within another year it was Scottish once again.

By 1304, however, the political and military situation had turned sharply in Edward’s favour. Much of the Scottish resistance had submitted. Stirling remained one of the last major centres still holding out.

A remarkably small garrison defended the castle under Sir William Oliphant. Edward arrived at Stirling on 22 April 1304 and assembled an enormous concentration of siege equipment against the fortress. Historic Environment Scotland describes 13 catapults and trebuchets bombarding the defences with stones and incendiary projectiles over the following months. The siege became both a military operation and a demonstration of royal power. Then Edward ordered something larger.

The War Wolf

The new machine became known as the War Wolf. Contemporary administrative records preserved in the Calendar of Documents Relating to Scotland confirm the existence of the weapon and the extensive organisation surrounding Edward’s siege machinery. The War Wolf was therefore no later legend invented to embellish the story of Stirling: it belonged to Edward I’s actual siege arsenal.

The reconstruction of events by Historic Environment Scotland describes five master carpenters and around 50 workmen assembling the huge machine. It was one of the most ambitious trebuchets constructed during Edward’s campaigns.

Its arrival appears to have had a psychological effect even before it was fully employed. According to the surviving accounts of the siege, the defenders offered their surrender while Edward’s formidable engine was nearing completion. Edward nevertheless wanted to see his new weapon used. Historic Environment Scotland reports that a viewing area was prepared for members of the royal court and that the War Wolf subsequently hurled a projectile weighing around 140 kilograms against the castle’s defences, damaging the curtain wall.

The incident illustrates something larger about Edward I’s warfare. Military technology was being used not merely to overcome resistance but also to display overwhelming royal resources. Historian Michael Prestwich’s study of Edward’s reign places the Scottish campaigns within a monarchy capable of mobilising formidable financial, logistical and military resources. The spectacle at Stirling therefore served a political purpose as well as a tactical one.

A king who could transport materials across Britain, assemble skilled craftsmen, construct enormous engines and batter one of Scotland’s strongest fortresses was sending a message far beyond the castle walls. For someone inside those walls, however, that demonstration of power could have had brutally physical consequences.

Was Skeleton 150 Really Killed by the War Wolf?

Here the evidence becomes much less certain. Radiocarbon dating places Skeleton 150 within a broad period compatible with the Scottish Wars of Independence. The early fourteenth century—and therefore the siege of 1304—fits the available chronology. But radiocarbon dating cannot identify a specific year of death.

The injuries offer another piece of circumstantial evidence. A single exceptionally powerful impact from behind is compatible with a siege projectile. Stirling was repeatedly attacked during the period from which the skeleton dates, and the 1304 siege involved an unusually concentrated bombardment by large mechanical artillery.

The burial location also matters. Skeleton 150 was interred within the castle rather than in an ordinary parish cemetery. Other people buried there show evidence of violent deaths associated by researchers with medieval conflict. Earlier isotopic and osteological investigations have consequently explored whether they were Scots, English soldiers or people of higher status connected with the garrison.

Taken together, those clues make the 1304 siege a persuasive possibility. They do not, however, establish that the War Wolf itself fired the fatal projectile. Edward possessed multiple siege engines at Stirling. Even if Skeleton 150 was killed in 1304 and even if a trebuchet was responsible, another engine could have launched the missile.

Buckberry has therefore been careful about the distinction. The evidence supports a trebuchet or similar siege engine as the most likely explanation, while identifying the War Wolf specifically remains speculative. That caution makes the discovery more convincing, not less.

Why Skeleton 150 Matters

Medieval chronicles contain vivid descriptions of sieges, bombardments and collapsing walls, while royal accounts preserve the enormous quantities of timber, metal, lead, labour and money required to conduct them. Human remains tell a different part of the story.

Skeleton 150 may provide exceptionally rare physical evidence of what siege artillery could actually do to a person caught in its path. The 167 fractures transform an abstract piece of military technology into something tangible: a machine powerful enough to damage a stone fortress could inflict overwhelming trauma on the human body.

The case also shows how archaeological interpretations can change. When archaeologists excavated the remains in 1997, they thought that much of the fragmentation had occurred after death. Re-examination first revealed extensive peri-mortem trauma, while newer imaging techniques have allowed researchers to reconstruct the pattern with far greater precision. What initially appeared to be a badly damaged skeleton has gradually become evidence for a specific kind of violent death.

Further research may refine the dating, ancestry and circumstances surrounding Skeleton 150. Ancient DNA and continued analysis of the wider group of burials could also reveal more about who these people were and why they were buried inside Stirling Castle.

For now, one conclusion remains more secure than the headline-grabbing connection with Edward’s famous weapon. A young medieval man suffered an extraordinarily violent death at one of Scotland’s most contested castles. His bones bear evidence of an impact unlike the ordinary sword cuts, arrow wounds and blunt-force injuries familiar from medieval cemeteries and battlefields.

It may never be known whether the stone that killed him came specifically from Edward I’s War Wolf. But more than seven centuries after the siege of Stirling, Skeleton 150 has revealed just how destructive the machinery of medieval warfare could be.
