LOMBARD KINGS' BASILICA YIELDS ROYAL TOMBS

In the heart of Pavia, Italy, a city steeped in history, recent archaeological endeavours have unearthed a remarkable chapter from the past. Within the ancient walls of the Basilica of Santissimo Salvatore, a site with origins tracing back to 657 AD, researchers have discovered the long-lost graves of Lombard kings, shedding light on a dynasty that once ruled vast regions of Italy.

The Basilica of Santissimo Salvatore was established by King Aripert I, who reigned from 653 to 661 AD. His vision was to create a royal mausoleum, a sacred resting place for himself and his lineage. Over time, this basilica became the eternal home for several Lombard monarchs, including Aripert I, his sons Perctarit and Godepert, and his grandsons Cunipert, Liutpert, and Aripert II.

Despite its significance, the exact locations of these royal tombs have eluded historians and archaeologists for centuries. The passage of time, coupled with various reconstructions of the basilica, had obscured these burial sites. However, recent archaeological investigations have brought this royal legacy back into the spotlight. Excavations within the basilica have revealed tombs that are believed to contain the remains of these Lombard kings, offering a tangible connection to a pivotal era in Italian history.

The Lombards, a Germanic people, played a crucial role in shaping medieval Europe. After migrating to Italy in the 6th century, they established a kingdom that endured until the arrival of the Franks in the 8th century. Pavia, serving as their capital, was not only a political hub but also a cultural and religious centre. The Basilica of Santissimo Salvatore stood as a testament to their devotion and their desire to leave an indelible mark on the landscape.

The unearthing of these royal graves provides more than just physical evidence of the Lombard presence; it opens avenues for a deeper understanding of their burial customs, religious practices, and societal structures. Artefacts and human remains from these tombs can offer insights into the health, diet, and even the personal identities of these monarchs.

This discovery also underscores the importance of Pavia in the broader narrative of Italian history. As the Lombard capital, the city was a melting pot of cultures, ideas, and traditions. The basilica, with its rich history and now-revealed royal tombs, stands as a monument to this dynamic past.

For historians, archaeologists, and enthusiasts alike, the revelation of the Lombard kings’ graves is a monumental find. It not only enriches our understanding of the Lombard era but also invites us to reflect on the legacies that have shaped modern Italy. As research continues and more discoveries emerge, the story of the Lombards and their time in Pavia will undoubtedly become even more vivid and compelling.
